Details

This is the iconic pipe MacArthur smoked and partially designed by the General himself. It is the one seen in most pictures of General MacArthur. Starting with an old design from the late 1800s, the General shortened the depth of the tobacco chamber for an easier smoke, which also made the pipe easier to use as a pointer. The long stem provides a cool smoking experience. Available in a straight version with a Natural bowl and a bent version with a coated and Polished bowl. This pipe is great for smoking, but also can serve as a conversation piece sitting on the mantle.

I purchased my MacArthur 5 star from this site almost two years ago. I'm in my late 20s, which is fairly young for a pipe smoker, but since I've stopped smoking cigarettes, I've lost all qualms about carrying a pipe into public. Now I don't smoke to look cool, but since I've had it for two years, I've noticed it becomes an instant conversation starter. I've been approached by everyone from a woman who appeared to be in her 80s to young 20 somethings who approach me just to compliment me on my pipe. This happens with the MacArthur moreso than some of my beautiful sandblasted briars. I'm not exactly sure why, but I'd guess that people see it for what it is, a no nonsense device for smoking a large amount of pipe tobacco.

Since the bowl is so large it's become a favorite "Weekend Pipe". Since I limit myself to 3 bowls a day (rarely 4 with small bowled pipes such as my MM Huck Finn) I often cheat by smoking large pipes on the weekend. It draws extremely easily and because there's just so much cob as a heat sink it always stays comfortable in the hand. There are a few shortcomings which prevent my rating the pipe a 5 star. Because the straight version is not available with the plaster of paris coating, the pipe isn't as durable as the coated versions. Consequently, it also does not develop coloring as all my coated pipes have done. My chamber is no longer round, but somewhat lop sided and starburst shaped from slightly uneven charring of the bowl. This phenomenon doesn't affect the smokeability of the pipe, but seems to happen to all of my natural corncobs sooner or later. The pipe is heavy, so heavy that if you like your teeth, I would highly recommend against clinching the pipe. The bits are plastic, and I find myself on this site for the very reason of ordering replacements for a warped and worn out bit, and I don't chew the bits or even clinch this pipe. However, I've come to accept these minor flaws, and at under $20 I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a large pipe to enjoy on lazy weekends. (Posted on 7/10/2016)
Long, pleasant, cool dry smoke Review by William

What an excellent smoker!

Sitting on my porch looking over the lake and fields, sun setting behind me, and a pipe that will smoke for the entire sunset.

Not only that, but it smokes as well as my Dunhill Churchwardens at a fraction of the cost. The smoke is cool, flavorful, the pipe stays dry the entire bowl (surprised me, I expected it to get wet with that much tobacco). The bowl is as deep as my entire little finger and almost swallows the tamper!

When I first got it and tested the draw empty, it had an issue. A quick inspection revealed it was in the stem, some small wood cubes, probably from the manufacturing process. Couple of pokes with a pipe cleaner and it drew perfectly. Test the draw on your pipes before you smoke 'em! (Posted on 11/10/2015)
